The objective of this project is to consolidate a proposal for the regulation of human activities in the Gulf of Tribugá, where Utria National Nature Park would represent a regional conservation core linked to community (individual and collective) and institutional (municipal, departmental and national) efforts for the management of the ecosystems and natural resources of the coastal zone.
The project will have biological – fishery information useful for decision making and local management agreements, as well as a fishery regulation proposal for the Gulf of Tribugá formulated jointly with the ethnic and fishery authorities.
MarViva aims to define and submit a declaration for conservation and sustainable use areas in the mangroves of Tribugá with elements for conservation and fisheries management, such as areas for fishing reserves, closed seasons, and conservation indicators for these ecosystems, validated by the national environmental authorities.
The project also contemplates the strengthening and consolidation of local organizational processes, with a special emphasis on the agreements for the implementation of the mangrove management plans for the five participating communities. This represents the strengthening of local governance.
The last component of the project aims to strengthen the artisanal fishing chain and generate economic benefits for these communities through the development and adoption of a business and performance plan with criteria for social and environmental responsibility that can be replicated in other areas. This process will begin once the behavior of the productive chains associated with fishing and the sustainable extraction of the resource have been identified and analyzed.
This project has been underway since the end of 2010 and it will terminate in 2012.
