Science and Communities

Technical-scientific knowledge is essential for a better understanding of marine and coastal ecosystems, and how the human population interacts with them.

Some human activities at sea overlap spatially and temporally, and sometimes they are not compatible with one another. A sound scientific foundation allows for the creation of baselines for the evaluation of the status of these ecosystems, rational planning of use areas (e.g. conservation, research, tourism, fishing, mariculture and navigation), and the monitoring of the outcomes from this regulation.

In addition, MarViva’s biologists and technicians compile, synthesize and map scientific information useful for locating and characterizing the conservation status of the marine resources, ecosystems and uses; to help generate policies and regulations; and by means of harmonization processes to locate each one of the user persons benefited in the most heavily used zones without causing damage to the marine resources. The exchange of material of interest with institutions and people has been key to this work.

MarViva also works with coastal communities that live and carry out activities in areas of special interest to marine conservation.

The active participation of these populations is critical because their economic and development interests are directly related to the environments and marine resources that should be conserved.

MarViva considers these communities strategic partners and stakeholders; therefore it seeks their insertion in market processes and the expansion of their capacity to participate in governance processes through marine and coastal planning and spatial regulation.
