Achieving a balance between socioeconomic development and the conservation of marine resources is a challenge, which is why MarViva organizes its tasks around specific themes including:
Public-private partnerships
Specialization in the marine field, a regional presence, the comprehensive scope of its programs and the successful establishment of public-private partnerships in Costa Rica, Panama and Colombia, have allowed the MarViva Foundation to have an impact on policies and to make changes favoring the marine and coastal ecosystems of the Eastern Tropical Pacific.
These public-private partnerships involve a state commitment to operations for the supervision and surveillance of the seas and effective implementation of the regulations made.
Toward this end, MarViva is developing a trust in order to ensure economic and technical resources for permanent support to the governments in exercising their functions, and to provide vessels to the governments of Costa Rica and Panama.
In general, MarViva pursues conservation as well as the long-term economic sustainability of human activities in the sea. A fundamental part of this approach is addressing problems of ecosystem security, food security, job security and public and private investment security in the sea.
Responsible fishing
Step by step, progress has been made on planning and regulating human activities in the sea, through the promotion of non-damaging fishing gear and responsible artisanal fishing in zones that are models for the entire Eastern Tropical Pacific region.
Advances have been made ranging from the reduction of illegal fishing to improvements in ecosystem health and the recovery of species populations.
Some of the mechanisms used have been advising fishers as they move into coastal tourism activities or in their marketing negotiations for fish and shellfish.
