In Costa Rica MarViva focuses its efforts in two geographical areas:
Cocos Island Nacional Park
Osa Conservation Area in the South Pacific
The organisation?s work is centred on the following activities:
Joint patrol actions with national authorities to monitor and prevent illegal fishing in Marine
Protected Areas.
Provision of technical and legal assistance to the authorities to help draft policies, laws and
regulations to support an adequate management of the country?s marine resources.
Awareness campaigns and collaboration with the media to shape public opinion as to the
importance of the role of marine protected areas.
In conjunction with other local partners, MarViva has begun a programme of promotion of
productive activities as an alternative to fishing, so as to help consolidate the Marine Protected
Areas of the Osa Conservation Area. This project aims to reduce pressure on the protected
areas and promote the appropriate and sustainable use of natural resources, helping to set up
micro and small businesses managed by members of the local community.
